Red Card Project Ghana 2008
In 2007, the SWA membership worldwide chose human trafficking to be the focus of the SWA annual International Convention. The Convention took place from March 8-11th, 2007 at the University of Ghana-Legon and brought together over 200 student delegates from around the world to tackle the issue of human trafficking. Co-sponsored by UNICEF – Ghana, the Convention featured speakers from organizations such as Amnesty International – Ghana, the West African AIDS Foundation, the Christian Council of Ghana, Children's Rights International, and the Apeadu Peace Center, as well as notable government guests, including the Interior Minister and the Minister of Women's and Children's Affairs. Throughout the three days, participants attended a number of panel discussions that served to thoroughly educate conference attendees about the various facets of this horrific problem in order to help these participants develop strategies for taking action on the issue globally.
It is against this backdrop that the Red Card to the Trafficking of Women and Children for Sexual Exploitation initiative was developed. First executed by Enslavement Prevention Alliance- West Africa during the Ghana 2008 games, the red cards provided an effective awareness campaign for addressing human trafficking during this high profile Ghanaian event. Our Ghana team created a strong partnership with the Local Organizing Committee of the Ghana 2008 games, and around 200,000 red cards were distributed alongside tickets to attendees. More details about the Ghana '08 red cards program can be read here.
On account of the success we experienced in Ghana, we seek to duplicate and expand upon the Red Card anti-trafficking campaign for the 2010 World Cup, 2012 Olympic Games in London and other international events.
